Tips - How To Be Good With Money

Most of us probably resolve to be more sensible with money in these times. We're going to live frugally, save regularly and not go into the red. But, myteriously, within a few months we seem to have run up a credit card debt and blown our savings on aholiday. The truth is that you don't need cast-iron dicipline or the wisdom of Warren Buffett. Here are some easy steps to get you from profligate to prudent this year - while still enjoying life.

Finds out if your books balance.
get out all your bank statements and work out how much you've earned - include benefits and interest savings - and how much you've spent overthe past year.

Bank onlines and check your balance twice a week. This will give you a clear idea of what's going in coming out.

Junk useless direct debits. Don't just go on paying for that life cover you don't need.

Build up a rainy-day fund. Set up a monthly direct debit to put money aside in a high-interest account.

Organise all your payments. Have your direct debits going out just after your sallary is paid in. The resris yours - to transfer into a savings account paying better rate of interest than your current account. Transfer back as and when you need extra cash.

Buy now, pay at once. If you can't afford something on month, with until the next

Use your credit card sparingly. Pull out the plastic when you absolutely have to have that half-price dress in the sales. But always pay it off before it incurs any interest.

Always shop around when contracts like your internet smd mobile phone service provider - come up for renewal. Dont forget to ring your existing provider to see if it can offer you something better.

Buy treats with reward points schemes. Use all those points you've accumulated on your various cards cards to give yourself a treat. Spoil yourself - after all, you deserve it.

Health - Spare Your Bones

Our skeletons naturally lose strength as we grow older. Here's how you can protect your bones and save yourself from injury by doing daily chores correctly.

Always sit up straight.
Pick a chair that supports the curve of your lower back (or use a roll-up towel or lumbar roll). Sit with your spine lengthened, shoulder wide.

Prepare for a cough or sneeze.
Sudden sneezes can jerk a weakened torso forwards and injure the spine. If you feel one coming on, bend your knees, back straight, and put a hand on your thigh for support. Or brace your lower back with your hand to stay upright.

Do chores correctly.
Take care as you vacuum, mop floor or sweep the deck. Bend fromyour knees and hips, not your waist. Don't twist; push rather and push

Bend from your hips. When you learn down to load the washing machine or make the bed, don't sag from your waist. Instead, bend at your knees and hips, keeping your lower back straight.

Open with care. Triying to lift a stuck or heavy object is a common cause of compressioon fractures, because it puts a great deal of pressure on your spine. Ask someone to help.

How to Write a Love Letter

We feel good when we make the people we love feel happy. Whether this letter is for someone you are confessing your secret love for them to, or someone that already knows and loves you, it will be appreciated. Bring back the art of letter writing!

Step
  1. Start with good stationary. No one wants to receive a note, no matter how heartfelt, on a scrappy piece ripped out of you school book- it looks like homework! Instead take time to choose a paper with a design or feel that reflects the person you are writing to.
  2. Start off lighthearted. If you are writing from a long way away, tell them you miss with them. If not, tell them about something in your day that reminded you of them like a pretty flower or a particular smell.
  3. Think of a time when you felt particularly moved by seeing your loved one, no matter how small the event. Recall the emotional and physical feelings you experienced in that moment.
  4. Write a description of that moment including details about your feelings at the time, starting with a phrase such as, "I remember when".
  5. Recall two or three other experiences when you were moved by your loved one's words or actions. Add recollections of these experiences to your letter in the same way you wrote about the first one.
  6. Add many things that you love about their personality and/or appearance.
  7. If you feel comfortable and it works for your relationship, add dirty things - talk about the last encounter you two had, or what you'd like to do next time you meet.
  8. End with a "P.S." Make it stupid. That way, any embarrassment you feel about the letter is lessened. Hopefully, you're not embarrassed by your love letter.
  9. It's not about being mushy gushy. It's about being honest to this person about how much they mean to you in your life in this world. That is far mushy gushy enough.
Tips
  • Spray the letter (once) with expensive perfume or cologne. The right smell could be very seductive and enhances the mood.
  • Describe your experiences using your own words, without forcing yourself to be fancy.
  • Take your time. If a letter is rushed, it shows. Pause to think before each sentence, and look up difficult words before you attempt to spell them to avoid ugly crossing outs.
  • Write your own, original words, not something you've read or heard unless you directly quote it. You could try quoting romantic lines from their favourite film or book.
  • Read it out loud! Just because it makes sense on paper doesn't mean it will make sense when spoken.
  • Try to learn calligraphy. If you think that's hard, it's not. Go to an art supply store, and get a pen, a fine nib, a thicker nib if you like, and a bottle of ink, then go slow and carefully when you write. This not only lets you think more about what you say, it also looks far more impressive.
  • Keep it appropriate for the person you're sending it to! If it's your partner of some time, then sure, write 3 paragraphs detailing your love of watching them sleep- if it's for the girl in your class you like, don't scare her off before she knows you've got a crush on her.
  • Cheesy can be okay, but be sure not to overdo it. Make it sweet, heartfelt, and true.
  • Don't go overboard and gush a ballad to someone you hardly know.
  • Don't lie to impress. Example: Don't say "I feel breathless everytime I think of you" if it's not true. Remember, you can't really take back the things you say without hurting someone. Honesty is the best policy.
  • Love letters are great as a "refresher" in a relationship, possibly for a special anniversary or such.

Tips - How to Calculate Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement tool that compares your height to your weight and gives you an indication of whether you are overweight, underweight or at a healthy weight for your height.

Step
  1. Collect a few household materials to find your Body Mass Index (BMI): your bathroom scale; a yardstick(not a household product); a pencil and paper and calculator.
  2. Weigh yourself on your bathroom scale. (The following formula is calculated in pounds.)
  3. Measure your height in inches using the yardstick.
  4. Use the pencil, paper and calculator to perform the following BMI calculation.
  5. Take your height in inches and square the number (i.e. multiply the number of inches by the same number of inches).
  6. Divide your weight in pounds by the second figure (your height in inches squared).
  7. Multiply that answer by 703. The answer is your Body Mass Index.
  8. Judge your personal BMI result against the following scale:
    • A BMI of less than 18 means you are under weight.
    • A BMI of less than 18.5 indicates you are thin for your height.
    • A BMI between 18.6 and 24.9 indicates you are at a healthy weight.
    • A BMI between 25 and 29.9 suggests you are overweight for your height.
    • A BMI of 30 or greater indicates obesity. If you are obese, try consulting a doctor or losing weight.
Tips
  • Maintaining a healthy weight is perhaps the single most important step you can take toward optimal health and long life. Calculating your BMI is a good rough indicator of your current weight and general condition.
  • The exact multiplicative factor is actually 703 + (4489/64516), but the tiny difference (about 0.002 in the bmi) is fully neglectable.
  • In Europe the same index is often called the 'Quetelet Index', after Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quételet (22 February 1796 – 17 February 1874) who proposed it.

Warning
  • The BMI is a pretty good indicator for the average person from age 25 to 65. But it has its limitations. It does not take into account muscle mass or your overall body type ("apple" vs. "pear" body types).
  • Recent research has found that the waist to hip ratio provides a much better indicator than BMI of whether an individual has too much body fat. Generally the waist to hip ratio should not exceed about 0.9 for men and 0.8 for women. Higher ratios indicate an increased risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart attack.
  • BMI is actually just a guideline and should not be used if one has access to a Skinfold test or a BIA (Bio-electrical impedance analysis). These tests measure the total amount of body weight that is from fat. This method is far more accurate and readily available at most gyms. Some home BIA tests are available via scales that also measure BIA. There are other methods that have a lower variance but are expensive, invasive and difficult to perform.
  • Some people weigh more because of muscle, not fat so the BMI test is not always correct

Tips - How to Expand Your Job

If your current job isn't all it's cracked up to be, why not think about expanding your existing job? While job descriptions can sometimes feel like a strait jacket, they don't need to be and provided you're bold and confident, with some strategic thinking you can turn your job into something a bit more exciting, dynamic, and suited to your evolving skill set. Move boldly where others have forgotten to tread...

Step 1
Look for unfulfilled gaps. These are the gaps through which unsolved problems fall and there are always some around. If you can see solutions and nobody else is paying them much attention, they are there for the taking. Spend a little of your time taking these under your wing and work away at them. In many cases there won't be a need to ask for permission; it will be a case of an evolving interest and can serve you really well to advance if you find ideal solutions. For more advice on finding problems to solve, see How to Define a Problem.

Step 2
Note the opportunities as they arise. If you have a gift for noticing how things could be done better, more clearly, faster, etc., note them down and work through them when you can. Learn How to Be Proactive. The more little solutions you can tuck under your belt, the more your initiative will be noticed and applauded.

Step 3
Make sure that working on these issues is not detracting from your properly assigned job and make sure the gap problems are worth solving. It will harm your career or trade trajectory if you're not doing your job properly, so make sure that is taken care of before taking on additional tasks. You might even need to devote some personal time to the gap problems but if you consider that solving them is worth it, that will be of benefit to you. To help you work out whether it is worth attacking the gaps, ask yourself:
  • What benefits will accrue to the organization if I solve this problem? (List them)
  • Will my work benefit personally? Is there a likelihood of improved job chances?
  • Will the time spent on this detract from my usual job?
  • If so, am I willing to give some extra time to it?
  • Am I able to solve this problem by myself/at all, or will I need help from others? (See How to Be Resourceful.)
  • Will I enjoy this challenge?
Step 4
Think about who else you might bring on board
to either help you expand your job or support you generally. If other people can confirm that what you're doing is needed, essential, and useful, then you're more likely to get managerial buy-in.

Step 5
Find ways to present your solutions clearly
. Be organized about your solutions and keep records, notes, photos, etc., of progress and results so that you can demonstrate the improvements with ease. It also helps if you can develop something of broader utility, such as a manual, a system, or even signage, that helps colleagues to benefit as well. Be prepared with fast, pointed, and accurate explanations of how your solutions have improved the workplace. Then read How to Get a Promotion!

Tips
It is a good idea to seek confirmation of your newly created role in some way, as this helps to ensure that you either get to keep this work as part of your expanded role, or it sets you in great stead for promotion or a raise. Have a chat with the boss about how your expanded role proves that you are ready for more money/responsibility/influence, etc.
